Money and identity are tied together more tightly than most of us think. Your income eventually catches up to who you believe you are.
Read that again slowly, because money and identity are tied together far more tightly than most people realise.
How money and identity are linked
Say someone keeps telling themselves, “I’m just not good with money.” Even when a good opportunity arrives — a raise, a client, a chance to charge more — some part of them finds a way to shrink it or turn it down.
Not on purpose. It just feels safer to stay who they already believe they are.
I’ve seen this happen so many times. Two people get the exact same opportunity. One holds onto it and grows. The other somehow finds a way to lose it, or shrink it, or give it away.
The difference usually isn’t luck. It’s identity.
Your mind works hard to keep you consistent
Here’s the quiet part. Your mind works very hard to keep you consistent with whatever you believe about yourself.
If you believe you struggle with money, your mind will quietly arrange situations that prove you right. It’s not sabotage in the dramatic sense. It’s just consistency doing its job.
A better question than “how do I earn more”
So try asking a different question. Not “how do I make more money,” but “who am I becoming?”
Someone who creates value. Someone who solves problems for people. Someone who keeps learning. Someone who keeps growing, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Change the person you believe you are, and your bank balance eventually follows. It works in that order, not the other way around.
Where to begin
Notice the sentences you repeat about yourself and money this week. Catch just one that isn’t kind, and gently ask whether it’s actually true.
That’s the beginning of a new identity. And a new identity is the beginning of a new result.
