There is a quiet healing power of empathy that most of us are never taught. There are moments when someone’s words stay with us long after the moment has passed. We replay the conversation. We question what they meant. And without noticing, we keep the hurt alive inside us.
I want to show you a gentler way to carry that.
Empathy is not the same as excusing
Let’s be clear about one thing first. Empathy does not excuse hurtful behaviour. It doesn’t mean what happened was okay. Boundaries still matter. Accountability still matters.
This quieter kind of strength is something else entirely. It simply asks a different question.
What might this person have been going through? What pain might they have been carrying? What fear might have been driving them?
Sometimes people hurt others because they themselves are hurting. That doesn’t make it right. But understanding it can soften what you feel.
Why the healing power of empathy lightens the weight
When we stop replaying the offence and start becoming curious about the person behind it, something inside us begins to relax.
I’ve watched this happen for so many of the people I work with. The other person didn’t change. The past didn’t change. But the weight they were carrying got lighter, because they stopped gripping the story so tightly.
That is the real gift here. Empathy doesn’t always change the other person. Sometimes it changes the burden you’ve been carrying.
A small practice for today
You don’t need to forgive everything today. You just need to loosen your grip a little.
Think of one situation that’s still heavy for you. Instead of asking “how could they,” try asking “what might they have been carrying.” Notice what shifts, even slightly.
That small shift is where healing begins.
